AUSI, an Australian based company formed in 1994, arose as a response to the lack of Australian ideas in the scuba diving training market place. Its goals were to create a training system where dive schools could be free to address specific challenges that many different training areas have to offer.
AUSI Pty release a New Text entitled... "Recreational Scuba Diving: A guide to safe diving"
The AUSI Pathway consists of...
Three pre-entry courses:
 AUSI Scuba Experience
 AUSI Scuba Adventure
 AUSI Level I Scuba Diver
Five levels of scuba training:
AUSI Level II scuba diver (open water)
AUSI Level III scuba diver (advanced)
AUSI Level VI scuba diver (deep specialty)
AUSI Level V scuba diver (deep with rescue)
AUSI Level VI scuba diver (dive master)
Five professional levels:
 AUSI Level VI Professional
Assistant Instructor (AUSI Level I Scuba Instructor)
Scuba Instructor (AUSI Level II - VI Scuba Instructor)
 AUSI Instructor Trainer
 AUSI Instructor Examiner
The whole AUSI Pathway is fully modular. For example AUSI Scuba Adventure is Module 1 of the AUSI Level II. Scuba Diver course and a diver can claim credits for each module as they travel from one AUSI Facility to the next.
There are 34 classroom modules, 14 practical training modules, 19 ocean training modules plus a further 81 dives for experience in the whole AUSI Pathway from AUSI Scuba Adventure to AUSI Instructor.
Other specialties
There are many other specialties such as Rescue Diver, Underwater Photography, Night Diver, Underwater Navigation and Technical Diving.
AUSI also has formal Area Orientation and Refresher Programs.
AUSI also recognizes its divers by offering the AUSI ScubaRoo Dive Crew program whereby AUSI provides a quarterly newsletter to keep the diver informed of the latest in the dive industry.
In response to a market survey conducted in 1995 where over 97% of respondents agreed that newly certified divers should undergo annual renewal, AUSI created its unique AUSI Renewal Program. This program acknowledges that in newly certified divers competency may decline and they may require the help of a dive industry professional. Any instructor anywhere in the world can conduct the AUSI Renewal Program and there is no AUSI fee for this service.
AUSI Facilities
There are four levels of AUSI Facility:
AUSI Mates - who are willing to help AUSI divers with their renewal
AUSI Training Facilities - who conduct all levels of AUSI training up to AUSI Assistant Instructor level
AUSI Gold Star Facilities - who offer all levels of AUSI training including AUSI Instructor
AUSI Five Star Facilities - who are acknowledged for their expertise in sales, service, safe diving practices, community involvement and environmental awareness
AUSI Facilities issue AUSI certification cards directly to the diver as they complete the course, therefore eliminating time delay and preventing the inconvenience of lost mail.
AUSI Product, such as its innovative QED Dive Table and the simply styled course notes, are designed to be user friendly.
There are fundamental differences to AUSI's system of training.
In the classroom AUSI instructors take a very personal interest in the trainee by carefully working through AUSI's very well designed course notes which presents the trainee with practical orientated theory concepts.
AUSI's practical skills training concentrates on seven key areas of diver skill development.
Key skills are:
Surface skills: To ensure safe and correct snorkeling and surface skill procedures
Buddy skills: To ensure that divers are always close to their buddy and aware of their buddy's well being
Air monitoring skills: To ensure that the diver is always aware of air consumption and allows enough air for a safe ascent including safety stops and if there is a need to share air with their buddy
Buoyancy skills: To ensure divers are always positively buoyant whenever they are on the surface and have good buoyancy control during descent, at depth and on ascent
Mask skills: To ensure the diver's response to a lost or flooded mask is "instinctive"
Regulator skills: To ensure the diver's response to a lost or flooded regulator is "instinctive" and to be able to instinctively respond to both regulator and mask problems that could occur
Out of Air drills: To ensure the diver's response to an out of air situation or an equipment malfunction is "instinctive"
During the practical skills training phase of an AUSI course, AUSI instructors pay close attention to ensure that there is lots of repetition, particularly the essential skills listed above. Correct repetition skills means that a skill is properly acquired and a response to a situation will be instinctive response so as potential problems are automatically solved before they result in an unfortunate accident. The result of this extra care ensures that trainees enjoy their ocean dives more with an added degree of competence and safety.
In the ocean phase of AUSI training, trainees "learn the skill of diving" and not just waste their valuable underwater time observing other class members perform skills on every dive. During the ocean diving stages of the AUSI training system the emphasis is placed on both dive planning and having a good time underwater. Priority is also given to exploring the wonderful marine environment under the close supervision of an AUSI instructor.
The AUSI system has also been designed to allow in-house instructor training with the use of AUSI's specially designed competency based assessment forms. Instructor courses can take 9 days, 9 weeks or even 9 years. In other words, instructor training can be designed to suit the time frame of both the store and the trainee. All instructor candidates must pass examination by an independent AUSI Instructor Examiner.
For instructors from other agencies who wish to become an AUSI instructor, AUSI has also made their Orientation (crossover) programs easier. Instructors from other agencies simply work through the AUSI Instructor Workbook which involves completing the lesson reviews of the AUSI Instructor Course Notes and undergoing an open book Standards and Procedures Examination. AUSI orientation can be done using this web site.

Preface
Recreational Scuba Diving - a guide to safe diving is a comprehensive guide to the theory of scuba diving written to enable new divers, experienced divers and instructors to have a clearer understanding of the principles of safe diving. The informative text covers the essentials for introductory scuba diving, open water diving, advanced diving and specialty diving. The review questions and the end of each chapter are designed to assist with learning and understanding. There are six sections to the book structured according to the level of training being undertaken:
Section One - Introduction to scuba diving
Fundamentals of equipment, underwater physics and basic physiology, essential knowledge required before venturing underwater for the first time.
Section Two - The diver underwater
Advanced underwater physiology, so a diver has an understanding of the component gases of air and their effects when breathed at depth.
Section Three - Dive planning
Basic principles of safe dive planning.
Section Four - Diving first aid
Recognition, treatment and prevention of problems a diver may encounter in the field.
Section Five - Specialty diving
Key information for a diver to progress beyond open-water training. This specialist knowledge forms the basis of the Advanced Open Water certification and other specialties.
Section Six - Scuba mechanics
Essential reading for divers who wish to understand the operation of scuba equipment.
It must be emphasized that safe and enjoyable scuba diving begins with thorough training in the basic skills, preferably in the comfort of a pool where they must be learned and practiced until they are second nature, before venturing into the ocean. The basic skills are listed in Appendix I - Essential diving skills. Ocean dives should follow a structured format offering a variety of dive sites that will not only challenge the trainee but also enhance learning, safety and enjoyment. If you don't feel comfortable after completing your dive course, insist on doing more training dives under supervision until you do. This will protect your investment and you will enjoy a lifetime of wonderful scuba dives.
